REPORT OF GUEST LECTURE

Guest Lecture on "Assessment and management of patients with altered sensorium” on 29th April 2023 between 4:00 pm & 5:30 pm was conducted by the Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing, 必威体育betway888 College of Nursing. The target audience were students of nurse practitioners in critical care postgraduate residency programme and MSc nursing students. Dr. Mathangi Krishnakumar, Assistant Professor, Surgical and Neurointensive care unit, Department of Anesthesia, St. John’s Medical College Hospital, discussed the assessment of patients with altered sensorium. Assessment of patients with altered sensorium in traumatic brain injury -right temporal SDH, acute ischemic stroke- left MCA infarct with mass effect and bacterial meningitis were the highlights. Approaches to assessment, history, focused neurological examination, vital signs, imaging, and lab studies were discussed.

Dr. Shweta Naik, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Neuro-Anesthesia and neurocritical care, NIMHANS elaborated on the management of patients with altered sensorium. Neurological and non-neurological causes of altered sensorium and risk factors for secondary brain injury, immediate respiratory and circulatory support, sedation and analgesia, nutrition support, glycemic control, stress ulcer prophylaxis, coagulopathy and DVT prophylaxis, fluid and electrolyte management, ways to prevent infections and ways to monitor the brain were discussed. Management of the abovementioned cases was also discussed. The session was conducted online as a webinar. A total of 52 participants from various colleges attended the session. Mr. Anil Raj, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Medical-Surgical Nursing hosted the session. The session was coordinated by Dr. Jyothi Chakrabarty Professor & HoD, Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing.
